Roman name : Jupiter (Planet named after him). Thursday is named after Zeus (read Weekday article)
Zeus is one of the most famous and powerful gods in Greek mythology. He is the king of the gods and the ruler of the sky and thunder. He is also the father of many gods and heroes, such as Athena, Apollo, Hercules, and Perseus.
Zeus was born to the Titan parents Cronus and Rhea, who ruled the world before the Olympian gods. Cronus had a prophecy that one of his children would overthrow him, so he swallowed them all except Zeus, who was hidden by Rhea in a cave on Crete. When Zeus grew up, he freed his siblings and led a war against Cronus and the Titans, which ended with the victory of the Olympians.
Zeus then became the supreme god and divided the world with his brothers Poseidon and Hades, who got the sea and the underworld, respectively. Zeus married his sister Hera, the goddess of marriage and childbirth, but he was notorious for his many affairs with other goddesses and mortal women. Some of his famous lovers include Leto, Europa, Io, Danae, Leda, Semele, and Alcmene.
Zeus was worshipped as the protector of justice, law, order, and hospitality. He was also the patron of kings, oaths, fate, and weather. He could control thunder, lightning, rain, wind, and storms with his thunderbolt, which was forged by the Cyclopes. He was also known for sending signs and omens to humans through birds, dreams, and oracles.
Zeus had many temples and shrines throughout Greece, but his most famous sanctuary was at Olympia, where the ancient Olympic Games were held in his honor every four years. His sacred animals were the eagle, the bull, and the oak tree. His Roman equivalent was Jupiter, who shared many of his attributes and stories.
Zeus is a fascinating god who represents both the glory and the flaws of Greek mythology. He is a symbol of power, authority, wisdom, but also of lust, jealousy, and wrath. He is revered as the father of gods and men, but also feared for his unpredictable and sometimes cruel actions. He is Zeus, the sky and thunder god of Greek mythology.
