Hephaestus is a master of the forge and the anvil, who creates marvelous weapons and objects for the gods and heroes. He makes the thunderbolts for Zeus, the armor for Achilles, the shield for Heracles, the necklace for Harmonia, and many more. He also builds automatons, such as golden maidens, bronze bulls, and iron men. He is the patron of craftsmen and artists, who seek his skill and inspiration. He is also the source of fire and civilization, as he teaches humans how to use metal and tools.

Hephaestus has many stories and challenges in Greek mythology. He was born lame or crippled, which made him different from the other gods. He was either thrown from Olympus by his parents or he fell while trying to protect his mother from Zeus’s anger. He landed on the island of Lemnos, where he was nursed by the nymphs and learned his craft. He later returned to Olympus with a vengeance or a reconciliation, depending on the version. He married Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, but she was unfaithful to him with Ares, the god of war. He also had affairs with other goddesses or mortals, such as Athena, Aglaia, or Thetis.

Hephaestus was worshipped throughout Greece and beyond. He had many temples and altars dedicated to him, where people would offer sacrifices or gifts of metal or fire. He was also honored in many festivals and rites, such as the Chalceia in Athens or the Hephaestia in Lemnos. His most famous cult site was the Hephaestion in Athens, a temple that he shared with Athena. He was usually portrayed as a bearded man with a hammer and tongs. He was often accompanied by his symbols or attributes, such as a fire, a volcano, a donkey, or a quail.
