The Batman is now available streaming online on HBO Max & other services such as Apple TV and more. The highest grossing movie of 2022 so far, The Batman is one of the oldest DC Comics characters, and as most of the characters created in the early days of DC Comics (1940’s +) there is a link to Greek mythology.

Some of the DC Characters are very easy to identify which Greek myth inspired them (at least once you are made aware of it), such as Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash and Shazam. Other characters like Batman, Superman and Catwoman are not so obvious but the link is still there. The 3 core characters of DC Comics, which form part of the Justice League are none other than the 3 main gods of Greek mythology.

Superman is inspired by Zeus, Batman by Hades and Aquaman by Hades. And qualities of Hercules are sprinkled throughout. So it makes sense that the core is inspired by the core Gods. Then you have The Flash which is inspired by Hermes and even the Green Lantern which some say is inspired by Apollo.

Then comes Catwoman, which as you can read about in the article about the ancient roots of Catwoman, is a blend of Egyptian goddess Bastet with Artemis from Greco-Egyptian times. You might not want to believe this article the first time you read it, neither did some of us, but with time it sinks in and makes sense. You can always use Google to read more about these topics and learn more. Even Marvel comics took a lot from Greek myths in helping them shape their first superheroes, but it is a bit less obvious than with DC Comics, even though there are Marvel comics heroes that are directly named just like the Greek myth they came from.

Enjoy discovering the influence of mythology on modern superheroes!
