Oct. 18-24 : National Chemistry Week & Democritus

Democritus set the foundation of Atomic Theory in 460 BC

For National Chemistry Week (in the USA), we remember Democritus, the father of the Atomic Theory. He introduced the concept of the atom to chemistry and science, even though his theory would not be accepted for over 2000 years.

It was very common in the ancient world that new theories or ideas that turned out to be right were not accepted for thousands of years (e.g. Aristarchus of Samos proposed the sun was the center of the universe 1700 years before Copernicus proved him right.)
