Nov. 10 : World Science Day & Ancient Greece

The logo of UNESCO is based on the Parthenon, in recognition of the significant contribution of ancient Greece to the evolution of science, education and culture.

On World Science Day, we will take a look at the history of Western Science, which had its origins in ancient Greece with the PreSocratic philosophers. What most people don’t know is that the early Greek philosophers were also the first scientists in the world, and while you can argue if that was Aristotle or Thales or Democritus, it was in ancient Greece that Western science was born.

The ancient Greeks were the first to systematically gather all the existing knowledge around them (including what they learned from the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians) and put it together with a logical structure and method to turn into science as we know it today. Watch the documentaries below for a crash course on the birth of science followed by the evolution to Plato and Aristotle. Many of the things Aristotle said have since been proven wrong by modern science, but he is remembered for setting things in motion to evolve to what they are now:
