June 6 : Russian Language Day & the influence of Greek

For Russian language day we will take a look at the Greek influence on the Russian language and the Cyrillic alphabet, which was based on the Greek alphabet and is today 1 of 3 official alphabets of the EU (along Latin and Greek).

Saints Cyril and Methodius were Greek missionary brothers who helped create the Cyrillic alphabet (which is named after St. Cyril). You should also read our blog post on the influence of Greek on English and other western languages if you are interested to learn more.
