The Sirens were giant, winged creatures with the heads of women. They lived on rocks on the sea, where their beautiful singing lured sailors to shipwreck. Odysseus filled his sailors’ ears with wax so that they might sail safely past the Sirens.

They were formerly handmaidens of the goddess Persephone and when she was secretly abducted by Haides, Demeter gave them the bodies of birds to assist in the search. They eventually gave up and settled on the flowery island of Anthemoessa.

The Seirenes were encountered by the Argonauts who passed by unharmed with the help of the poet Orpheus who drowned out their music with song.

Fascinating. I have seen them so many times on movies and did know where they actually came from. Well, now I know!

Bronze dagger and victim’s blood – The only way to kill a siren is to stab it with a bronze dagger dipped into the blood of someone it has infected. The death of a siren releases its victims from its spell. Mirrors – A siren’s true face can be seen in a mirror.

Great. Now I know exactly what to do if they pull up in front of me.
