50th Anniversary Saturn Awards & The Boys
The 50th anniversary Saturn Awards just wrapped up earlier this week. Named after the Roman name of Greek god Kronos (the father of Zeus), the Saturn Awards are given to the best science fiction, fantasy and horror movies/series of the year.
As you can expect from an award ceremony named after Greek/Roman mythology, many movies/series that are based on or inspired by Greek mythology are featured at the Saturn Awards. First here is a video about all the movies that got nominated, and below we will talk a bit about The Boys, a series that is deeply rooted in Greek mythology but in a way that is not obvious to the casual viewer.
The Boys won a Saturn Award for Best Action/Adventure Streaming Series. A well deserved award for The Boys, a dark comedy/action series about superheroes abusing their powers. The show spoofs The Justice League with a team called The Seven (the original Justice League were 7) that are obvious references to the Justice League.
As you hopefully know by now if you have followed us for a while, The Justice League is heavily inspired by the Greek Gods. See where we are going? The Seven are inspired by The Justice League who in turn are inspired by the Greek Gods. Here is what it looks like:
A-Train is inspired by The Flash, who is inspired by Hermes
Homelander is inspired by Superman, who is inspired by Zeus
The Deep is inspired by Aquaman, who is inspired by Poseidon
Black Noir is inspired by Batman, who is inspired by Hades
Queen Maeve is inspired by WonderWoman, who is the daughter of Hippolyta and Zeus
Lamplighter is inspired by Green Lantern, who is inspired by Apollo
So there you have it, the Greek myth roots of The Boys. The show was recently renewed for a 4th season which should come out sometime in 2024. Other shows that won Saturn Awards that are linked to Greek mythology include The Batman, Dune, Superman, various Star Wars shows, as well as a remaster of the 1931 Frankenstein included in the Universal Classic Monsters: Icons of Horror Collection 4K.
