Friends Reunion : 3 Greek goddesses in 1 picture!
As I was watching the Friends Reunion the other day one moment caught my attention, a moment most people would never realize, a moment when you see 3 Greek goddesses on screen at the same time. It was when all the gang was reunited in Central Perk with a picture of the Statue of Liberty in the background. Who are the 3 Greek goddesses you might ask? Well it’s Phoebe, Jennifer Aniston and the Statue of Liberty! How, you might ask? Let me explain!
Let’s start with Phoebe (played by Lisa Kudrow). Phoebe is the name of a Greek Titan goddess, grandmother of Artemis, goddess of the moon and hunt. Many people associate Phoebe with Artemis because Phoebe was the nickname of Artemis also, due to her grandmother. And here is were things get interesting. You actually see grandmother and grand-daughter in this picture, because the Statue of Liberty is Artemis herself! Let me explain.
The Statue of Liberty is based on Roman Goddess of freedom Libertas, who is herself based on the Greek goddess of freedom Eleutheria, which is actually an epithet for Artemis, known as Artemis Eleutheria. So yes, the Statue of Liberty is basically based on Artemis and transformed through the ages! So seeing the Statue of Liberty and Phoebe in the same image is actually very significant, it is a family reunion! Watch this video to learn more about the Phoebe/Artemis connection:
So we learned who are 2 of the Greek goddesses in the Friends Reunion, but who is the 3rd one you might ask? That’s Jennifer Aniston! You might not know, but Jennifer Aniston is Greek, and you might have caught the many references to Greece spread throughout Friends, like when Rachel goes to Greece for the honeymoon, or when the Greek priest is supposed to be at the wedding, or when Rachel talks about Greek tragedies.
So there you have it, 3 Greek goddesses in 1 tv show. Enjoy a clip about Jennifer Aniston talking about her trip back to Greece:
While on the topic of Phoebe, we have a special moon calendar that the ancient Greeks used to use to celebrate their gods, and we named it Phoebe’s moon calendar after Artemis/Phoebe. Go here to find our ancient Greek moon calendar.
