    The Judgement of Peter

Painted in a period around 1632-5, Peter Paul Rubens depicts the classic story of Greek mythology, the Judgment of Paris.

Zeus has decided that the Trojan prince Paris will decide which of the three goddesses, Hera, Athena and Aphrodite is the most beautiful and therefore worthy of the golden apple. Paris’ choice of Aphrodite, after a bribe, is one of the causes of the Trojan War, for ultimately it would lead to the abduction of Helen, and the raising of a thousand ships to retrieve her from Troy.

Symbolism abounds, for in addition to the other gods, Hermes and Eros, also painted is the golden apple of discord and the head of Medusa on the shield of Athena.

Sooo realistic! Wow, how does one paint with that much details and creativity?
